Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to contest particular rulings made by the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
